Problem Statement

Shopify merchants lacked a unified solution for offering subscription enrollments directly at the point of sale (POS). Without this functionality, merchants missed opportunities to convert in-store shoppers into subscription customers, disconnecting the in-store and online experiences.

Key challenges:

• No existing POS subscription enrollment functionality.

• Merchants needed to manage both online and in-store subscription data cohesively.

• Customers expected seamless enrollment processes regardless of shopping channel.

Approach

I began by diving into the workflows of both merchants and their customers. Merchants wanted a tool that would integrate effortlessly with their existing POS systems, without introducing complexity. Customers needed a frictionless way to subscribe in-store, mirroring the ease of online shopping.

To address these needs, I mapped out the ideal user flow: from a customer expressing interest in a subscription, to their information being captured at checkout, and finally, to the subscription syncing seamlessly with the merchant’s online store. Every touchpoint was designed to feel intuitive and natural, reflecting real-world interactions.

Collaboration was key. I worked closely with Shopify’s team to understand POS limitations and with Ordergroove’s developers to ensure the solution was technically feasible. Prototypes were tested with merchants to gather feedback, and iterations focused on making the setup process as simple as possible for store staff.

Solution

The final solution allowed merchants to enable subscription enrollments directly through Shopify POS. A streamlined workflow guided store staff to present subscription options during checkout, while customers could select from predefined plans with just a few taps. The integration ensured all data was synced in real-time with the merchant’s online store, providing a unified experience.

Beyond customer-facing improvements, the solution strengthened Ordergroove’s relationship with Shopify and positioned the company as a leader in subscription innovation. This collaboration didn’t just fill a gap; it created new opportunities for merchants to grow their businesses in ways they hadn’t imagined.
